ZEITLINES | 04.12.19
Hey sports fans, this one’s for you! Zeitlines celebrates the Canadian teams and athletes who made us proud this week. Finance Clerk Joe Drennan shares his enthusiasm for “the most wonderful time of the year” with both the Raps and Leafs in the playoffs and Corey Conners in the hunt after Round 2 in Augusta. CEO Bev Hammond reminds us that our women’s hockey team is kicking ass and taking names at the Worlds in Finland. And we should get behind them!
Joseph Drennan, Finance Clerk
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… No, it’s not Christmas. But if you’re a big sports fan like me, then it sure feels like it. I’m talking about playoff season. Hockey playoffs, basketball playoffs and if you go as far as liking golf like me, it’s Masters Weekend! Today, not only is it exciting to be a sports fan but a Toronto sports fan to boot. The Leafs, the Raptors, ANNND Corey Conners (born and raised just outside Toronto in Listowel, Ontario, who got a last-minute berth to Augusta) to cheer on.
I bleed blue and white. Like all Leaf fans, I’m painfully aware of the dreadful streak since last winning Lord Stanley’s Cup so I’m not going to get into detail. It’s too depressing. This year’s team has to be one of the best in years and I’m very optimistic. Another year of experience for Matthews, Marner, Nylander, the addition of Tavares and the breakout year for Rielly, how can you not be? I like their chances against the Bruins in the opening round. I have a theory about their bad play and it comes from a man on another contending Toronto team by the name of Kawhi Leonard who said, "There’s 82 games and for me these are just practices and playoffs is when it’s time to lace them up." Leafs in 6 baby, you heard it here first. Go Leafs Go!
Speaking of Kawhi Leonard, his Toronto Raptors are one of the favourites to get to the NBA Finals. Something the Raps have never done. If you think I’m optimistic about the Leafs, the Raptors are on a whole new level. The Raptors have made some bold moves this season and it all started with a new head coach, then trading away their most loyal superstar to ever put on a dino jersey in exchange for a top 3 player, and to cap it off, traded for an all-star centre mid-way through the season. They are all in and I couldn’t be more excited. With the rise of “Spicy P” Pascal Siakam how could you not like their chances? I really feel like they’ll get over the hump this year and make history for this ever-deserving franchise. Let’s Go Raptors!
Quiet please! Ah yes, the most prestigious golf event of all golf events, The Masters. From the great golfers, to the amazing shots, to the loud roars, to the epic collapses, to the beautiful landscape, this tournament has it all. I’m a golf fan but I’m also a busy dad so I rarely watch a golf tournament in its entirety. But The Masters is one that gets me. Literally, I plan my days around this tournament. I want to do nothing but sit on the couch and watch every moment it from start to finish. For Corey Conners, it’s a perfect time to get hot. Last week, he won his first ever PGA Tour event which qualified him to play in this tournament. There haven’t been many Canadians to root for in this tournament as of late so it’ll be a bonus this weekend to cheer him on. Golf Clap Conners!
The Ladies Are in the House Notice
Beverley Hammond, CEO
For those of you lost in the Raps and the Leafs this week (here’s looking at you Joe) you may have missed a moment of national pride when our women’s hockey team blanked Germany in the first game of the IIHF tournament in Finland.
This win is even more important on the heels of a real loss for women’s hockey – the news that the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) where so many of our star players play, is folding on May 1st .
You didn't see the game against Germany last night because it wasn't broadcast and you would have been hard-pressed to find the highlights on this morning’s sports broadcasts. Much like the CWHL games. Not surprising but as always disappointing. It is time for hockey fans to get up off the couch and support our women – both in Finland and here at home.
